Nogales, Sonora, Mexico population is estimated between 250,000 to 350,000. It is next door to Nogales, Az & the two cities are called Ambos Nogales, the twin cities. Nogales means walnuts in Spanish, & ranks as the largest Port of Entry for Mexican produce & is a major distribution center, especially for winter produce. Approximately 4 billion pounds of Mexican produce is trucked through the port of entry each year, with an estimated value of about $3 billion. Products of over 100 Mexican manufactures, called maquiladoras, are also manufactured.
Besides being a large trade & industrial center, it has a large tourist center consisting of 10 square block area just south of the Port of Entry. There are shops, restaurants & many pharmacies where prescription drugs are usually cheaper than in U.S. Tourists usually enjoy haggling with the merchants, & it is expected as part of your shopping experience, trying to haggle the items you want down to a reasonable or discounted price. Deals can usually be had on merchandise, such as, silver jewelry, tooled leather belts & handbags, perfumes, hand-blown glassware, tinware, wrought iron pieces, clothing, rugs, pottery & plaster figurines.
